Customers are funny people. As a customer, I have never thought of myself as a peculiar or funny kind of person. But I think there are a few* people in this world who can fall into that category anytime he/she shops.
I had a very short shift on Saturday. It just so happened that I didn't have a customer in line when a lady walked in and came to my register with a bag of purchases. She wanted to know where exchanges and returns could be done for some shirts she got for her husband. I explained that if she wanted the same item, but a different color or size, she just needed to bring them back up with her previous purchases so I could make the exchanges for her. Otherwise, she'd have to take it to customer service.
I went along ringing up some more customers after I had talked to this customer. About 20 mintues later, she came up to my register again with the bag of shirts. Her English wasn't very good, so I had a hard time understanding what she was saying to me. When I figured it out, she said, "Ok, I have my exchanges. They are the same shirts, but a bigger size." Instead of bringing both sets of shirts to the registers so I could exchange them for her, she put her original purchases back on the shelf and put the new ones in her bag!
I had to explain to her that she had to bring both sets of shirts up in order to do the "even exchange." She was so confused when I said she had to bring both sets of shirts up! So she went back and found her original purchases and I finished the transition.
As she walked out, I couldn't help thinking that I've NEVER seen anyone attempt to exchange an item, but put the original purchase back in its place. Oh the laughs you get from retail! I'm almost surprised that she didn't try to walk out with the bigger sizes without bothering to check out!
Like I said, customers are funny people.
